What is a Corkrugâ„¢?

Corkrugâ„¢ have come a long way since Jason & Michelle Allen created it back in 2005. Located on Vancouver Island in beautiful British Columbia, Canada with their 7 amazing children, they have been in the floor covering industry for more than 20 years. Being able to field a baseball team from your home creates heavy wear and tear on flooring.  So the need to create a beautiful, durable and sustainable area rug arouse.  After years of looking for the right combination of materials, they were excited to create and patent Corkrugâ„¢.

Cork is the phellem layer of bark tissue that is harvested primarily from Quercus suber (the cork oak), which is endemic to southwest Europe and northwest Africa. Cork is composed of suberin, a hydrophobic substance. Its impermeable, buoyant, elastic, hypoallergenic and fire retardant. These properties make it the perfect material to make a resilient, anti-fatigue, stain resistant area rug.  The top cork layer is adhered to recycled felt which has a natural rubber backing.  Enhancing Corkrugsâ„¢ anti-fatigue qualities, while eliminating the need for a secondary non-slip underpad.
